Bloomsburg Strike

BLOOMSBURG, PA- “I don’t think I should speculate on that, you should visit passhe.com and look at the FAQ section for an answer to that question. Back to what I keep saying, own your education. Use this time to keep up with your work flow and meet with peers to go over new material.” This is the constant response for many of the questions being asked at the Q&A session on October 20th. Among the large crowd of students who gathered to receive information, this was not a satisfactory response for any of them.

As the strike continues, students grow more concerned about what might happen to their education and classes for the current semester. Rumors fly around confusing students even more and they are not receiving any real answers. Will the strike last more than a week? Should we go home and work so we aren’t wasting time? Do we have to go to our classes if the professor will not be there? Is the semester going to be cancelled if the strike goes too long, and if so will we be refunded for the classes?

One young freshmen girl stepped up to the microphone to ask a question and made a big statement. She says, “I didn’t come here to teach myself. My parents are paying a lot of money and taking out loans to pay this school for my tuition. I’m putting all this money into my education for nothing and all you’re basing a solution on is faith that this will be resolved quickly.” Once she spoke people were cheering because someone finally said what everyone in that crowd was thinking.

Just the same as most other responses, however, she was given the same answer. They told her they are hoping that the strike will not go long and if it were too, they would figure out a plan then. For many, college is not an easy thing to pay for. Loans are taken out for student’s education and then they spend the next several years trying to pay them back. If the strike were to continue and the semester is cancelled, students need to know if they are going to get their money back or not.

After leaving the Q&A session, it leaves most all questions asked unanswered. You can find a great deal of information online on the website they provided, but no questions were given a very good response, almost making this session pointless to attend. Students need to be more informed on what is going on around them and with their own education. This begins with the faculty and staff handling the negotiations not leaving the students so much in the dark.
