People Killing Animals

In November of 2016, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) released a new ad comparing livestock born in the meat and dairy industries with human victims of sexual assault. The video was posted on twitter and received a huge amount of negative feedback.

Tyler Kingkade, senior editor and reporter for the Huffington Post, attacked PETA with a tweet saying, “Peta is here to trivialize sexual violence and suggest you support rape if you're not vegan,” and included a link to the video at the end.

After seeing the huge number of negative reactions from twitter users, PETA came back to defend their ad saying, “Acknowledging that animals are sexually abused for meat & dairy doesn't take away from seriousness of sexual abuse of humans.”

They are standing by their campaign and aren’t looking like they are going to back down anytime soon.

This ad like many others that PETA have released are made to provoke people and get them to think about the animals they are consuming and the fur they are wearing in a different, more crude way.

After a recent unveiling of a PETA campaign, Pink, a long-time animal rights activist, told US Weekly, “I’ve always felt that animals are the purest spirits in the world. They don’t fake or hide their feelings, and they are the most loyal creatures on Earth.”

She talks about once being selfish and wearing fur on multiple occasions but has since changed her ways and is now completely against wearing animal fur for fashion.

PETA has been known for their offensive and controversial campaigns in the past, but also have gotten public support from many Celebrities as well.

Paul McCartney, along with Pamala Anderson, Pink, Morrissey, Khloe Kardashian and many other celebrities have posed as the faces for PETA ad campaigns.

In McCartney’s ad, he told a story saying, “Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realized, 'I am killing him--all for the passing pleasure it brings me.’ And something inside me clicked. I realized as I watched him fight for breath, that his life was as important to him as mine is to me.”

According to PETA, Ninety-seven percent of the U.S. meat supply comes from factory-farmed animals where animals on factory farms are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them.

A huge controversy in choosing to become a vegetarian has to do with the ethical side of killing animals for people to consume and the way that they are killed.

From the Department of Animal Science at Colorado State University, Temple Grandin and Mark Deesing, studied various animals and claim that animals are sentient beings that have emotions and social connections. Their scientific studies show that cattle, pigs, chickens, and all warm-blooded animals can experience stress, pain, and fear.

According to The New Yorker, in the United States about 35 million cows, 115 million pigs, and 9 billion birds are killed for food each year. Vegetarians use these numbers to feed their numerous reasons for refusing to eat meat.

Jeff Welty, author of Humane Slaughter Laws, says that US slaughterhouses must conform to the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA) which mandates that livestock be stunned unconscious before slaughter. This minimizes stress and calms the animals prior to their death.

To vegetarians, animals have feelings just like humans. They want to save as many animals as they can.

Comedienne and popular television host, Ellen DeGeneres, along with Australian- American actress and model wife, Portia de Rossi believe in vegetarianism to the extent of investing with singer Chrissie Hynde and producer Steve Bing in a new vegan restaurant, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Celebrity opinions can influence the way that people thing and persuade people to follow in their footsteps. People also take into consideration the way that meat affects their diet, weight, and risk of diseases.

According to a 1994 study by Harvard researchers, consuming beef, pork, or lamb five or more times a week significantly increases the risk of colon cancer. They believe that consuming different types of meats can give people a higher risk of getting cancer.

Contradicting those studies is the Nutrition Bulletin of the British Nutrition Foundation who emphasize that lean, unprocessed red meat can be a valuable source of nutrients and do not recommend that people remove red meat from their diets entirely, but rather, that they limit consumption to eleven ounces per week or less.

The international Journal of Obesity claims that a vegetarian diet promotes a healthy weight. They reference an Oxford University 2006 meta-study that compiled data from 87 studies which found that vegetarian diets are associated with reduced body weight.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association claims, “In one serving, meat provides all the essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein), as well as essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Most plant foods do not provide adequate levels of all the essential amino acids in a single serving.”

An important part in a person’s diet is protein, which comes from meats. The American Dietetic Association, however, says that a vegetarian diet can meet protein requirements, provide all the essential amino-acids and improve health, providing all the necessary vitamins, fats, and minerals.

Before becoming a vegetarian, the Harvard Health Publications recommends thorough research and consideration. It is a huge life changing choice, not to be taken lightly.
